The Trouble With Keeping in Touch
by Sophie Hannah
In case you’ve ever asked yourself how long
A girl can sit and chew a ball-point pen,
Put down some words and then decide they’re wrong
And cross the whole lot out and start again;
In case you’ve wondered how the record stands,
Take it from me (I know because I hold it) –
It’s infinite; it constantly expands.
The truth can change just when you think you’ve told it.
Whatever may have happened to us both
Since I last smiled and waved and said goodnight to you,
Our lives continue growing, and the growth
Makes it impossible for me to write to you.
